The photo above is of a snake's skull and jaws. You can see that the lower jaws are not connected at the front. This adaptation allows the snake to swallow prey much bigger than its mouth.

The smallest snake in the world (that scientists have discovered) is the Barbados threadsnake. As you can see, this snake is only slightly larger than a quarter.
