I made my first foray into the world of local produce while looking for an onion. On this particular grocery trip, the onion was the only produce item I needed, so it was a good way to start simple.
I went straight for the onions that I would normally buy - the nonorganic, inexpensive ones. However, as you might have predicted, these onions were not local. They were grown in and shipped from Mexico. So I went to the organic section to try my luck there.
The sticker on the organic onions did not say where the onions were from. The only information that the sticker included was the name of the farm that the onions came from and their produce number. Luckily, I had my iPhone with me and was able to look up the farm name. The farm turned out to be near Seattle! All signs were go for purchasing the onion. I have a feeling, however, that not all produce shopping will be this simple.
Lesson learned: produce should be labeled with the location of the farm it came from so that consumers can easily discern if it's local or not.
